About the position

The Hudson Valley Regional Council (HVRC) is seeking a full-time Environmental Scientist to assist in measuring and monitoring landfill emissions in the Mid-Hudson Region. This role involves both field and office work, focusing on data analysis, report writing, and collaboration with various stakeholders to support environmental and sustainability programs. The successful candidate will work under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant from the EPA, contributing to projects aimed at mitigating emissions from closed landfills using biofilters.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Project Manager to complete EPA-required documents, such as Quality Management Plan (QMP) and Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP).
  • Complete baseline and ongoing monitoring of methane emissions at landfills; determine LFG flow rate and concentration of methane being emitted.
  • Collaborate with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to update landfill site management plans.
  • Determine the number, location, and sizes of biofilters for each landfill.
  • Assist in the design, installation, and maintenance of landfill biofilters.
  • Support municipalities in pursuing solar and/or battery storage on landfills and assist with RFP publishing and vendor selection.
  • Participate in regional, county, and landfill meetings to support ongoing work.
  • Prepare and submit administrative documents, including quarterly reports and reimbursements.
  • Identify communities with eligible landfills for potential program participation.
  • Communicate with project manager and municipalities, collaborating with regional partners as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field.
  • Two years' field monitoring experience, with LFG monitoring preferred.
  • Experience in data analysis and report writing.
  • Specific experience with quality control and assurance plans preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong understanding of social-ecological systems.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to landfill sites.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of and experience with LFG collection.
  • Experience with drafting quality control and assurance plans.
