About the position

The Custodial Building Head at Kalispell Public Schools is a pivotal role responsible for leading custodial staff in maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment within the school facilities. This position requires a proactive individual who can set a high standard for cleanliness and effectively communicate with staff, students, and the community. The Custodial Building Head will work under the direction of the Facility Coordinator and is expected to demonstrate leadership qualities, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to teamwork. The role involves not only overseeing custodial operations but also participating in hands-on cleaning tasks and ensuring that all custodial staff adhere to established cleaning protocols and safety regulations. In addition to leading the custodial team, the Custodial Building Head will assist in coordinating building access and security, support after-hours programs, and provide input on staffing and training needs. The position requires a thorough understanding of cleaning equipment, products, and techniques, as well as the ability to maintain effective professional relationships with a diverse group of individuals. The Custodial Building Head will also be responsible for reporting any malfunctions or damages within the facilities and ensuring that all areas are stocked with necessary supplies. This role is essential in promoting a culture of cleanliness and safety within the school environment, and it may involve additional duties such as snow removal and light maintenance tasks as assigned by the Facility Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Leads custodial staff in providing custodial services in designated areas under the direction of the Facility Coordinator.
  • Assists in the coordination of building access and security.
  • Provides support to after-hours programs.
  • Provides input to Facility Coordinator on staffing, training, and custodial processes.
  • Sweeps, mops, and polishes in rooms and halls.
  • Dusts and/or polishes furniture, blinds and equipment.
  • Cleans restrooms and fills dispensers.
  • Vacuums, spot cleans and/or shampoos rugs, carpets, and furniture using commercial vacuum cleaners and shampooing equipment.
  • Reports malfunctions or damage of all items related to their facilities interior or exterior to the Facility Coordinator.
  • Stocks all areas with appropriate supplies.
  • Locks and unlocks doors as directed.
  • Moves furniture, equipment or fixtures as required.
  • Works in unison with school and Facilities Services staff at their designated facility.
  • Actively promotes teamwork.
  • Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas such as sidewalks, entryways and occasional roofs with the appropriate equipment.
  • May replace light bulbs.
  • May perform operations and checks on HVAC systems and changing of filters.
  • May perform light maintenance work as assigned by the Facility Coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Facility Coordinator.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently utilize labor and material resources.
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment, products, techniques and standards.
  • Skill in using cleaning products and equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain effective professional relationships with staff, students and the community.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Skill, dedication, and aptitude for working with students and the public.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels.
  • Ability to meet a high standard of safety and health code regulations.
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
