About the position

The Environmental Specialist 1 position at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) involves preparing and reviewing various environmental documents related to transportation projects. The role includes field data collection, evaluating environmental impacts, and assisting in the development of environmental studies. The specialist will represent the district in meetings, provide technical assistance, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations while contributing to the agency's mission of maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and reviews various environmental documents such as environmental assessments and impact statements.
  • Performs field data collection and documentation through photography or video.
  • Evaluates environmental impacts of proposed transportation projects and recommends project scope.
  • Compiles and analyzes data, tracks project work status, and prepares reports with findings and recommendations.
  • Researches and evaluates projects for development and implementation of transportation projects.
  • Processes applications for permits and analyzes present programs for process improvement.
  • Represents the district at meetings and answers inquiries from various stakeholders.
  • Maintains records and reports related to assigned projects and provides technical assistance as needed.
  • Assists in conducting special studies or programs/projects and prepares materials for public meetings.

Requirements

  • 3 years of training or experience in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology, hydrogeology, earth science, urban and regional planning, or other comparable fields.
  • Completion of an undergraduate core program in relevant fields such as engineering or environmental science.
  • Ability to provide own transportation for fieldwork.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with environmental pollution inspection and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental laws and processes.
