The Environmental Specialist I, II, or III positions at the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) are designed to actively support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the District's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Program. This program ensures compliance with environmental rules and regulations that affect the District's facilities, operations, and activities. The role involves conducting research, performing investigations, providing scientific and technical support, and monitoring compliance with the EH&S Program. Environmental Specialists will collect, synthesize, analyze, and manage environmental data, including wastewater treatment plant effluent data, pollutant emission measurements, and soil and water samples. They will utilize their knowledge of various scientific disciplines to recommend process improvements or solutions to emerging issues. In addition to data management, the specialists will monitor pending environmental rules, review draft rules and permits, and draft talking points to support the development of comments on behalf of the District. They will also be responsible for delivering training on environmental topics through classroom, hands-on, and computer-based formats. The positions require collaboration with internal customers and coordination of site visits, fieldwork, and sampling events with outside consultants or other District departments to support environmental compliance activities. The Environmental Specialist II and III roles expand upon the responsibilities of the I level, with the II level focusing on proactive development and implementation of the EH&S Program, evaluating compliance issues, and providing scientific and technical guidance. The III level leads the development and implementation of the EH&S Program, serves as the lead technical resource for environmental compliance issues, and manages medium to large environmental projects. All levels require a strong understanding of local, state, and federal environmental regulations, as well as the ability to communicate complex scientific information effectively to various stakeholders.
