About the position

The Environmental Specialist II position with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services involves conducting regulatory inspections of manufactured food establishments to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation standards. The role requires a strong understanding of microbiology, food safety regulations, and the ability to perform inspections and collect samples to assess food safety practices. The position also includes administrative responsibilities such as preparing reports and maintaining accurate records.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regulatory inspections of manufactured food establishments for compliance with safety and sanitation standards.
  • Utilize a risk-based approach to evaluate processing methods and production controls in food establishments.
  • Perform inspections and collect food and environmental samples as required under contract with the FDA.
  • Evaluate food processes and activities during opening inspections of new businesses.
  • Apply knowledge of pathogenic microbial organisms and food safety regulations during inspections.
  • Prepare reports documenting regulatory deficiencies and provide education on public health laws to food establishment personnel.
  • Initiate stop sale orders and other enforcement actions based on inspection findings.
  • Conduct investigations of consumer complaints and food-borne illness cases.
  • Maintain and operate inspection test equipment, ensuring proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Complete and submit accurate inspection reports and other required documentation.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Six months of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida, or one year of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health.
  • Possession of a valid Class E driver license.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in food safety or environmental protection.
  • Knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans.
  • Familiarity with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
