About the position

The Epidemiologist/Data Source Specialist will join the California Department of Public Health's Informatics Branch to enhance public health data systems and reporting capabilities. This role focuses on managing complex data sources, developing automated data pipelines, and providing technical support for public health reporting, particularly in response to infectious diseases like COVID-19. The position requires strong programming skills and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to improve data quality and support public health initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Specializes in knowledge and management of large, complex data sources related to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
  • Establishes and maintains reliable, efficient, and effective automated data pipelines and reporting solutions.
  • Analyzes and resolves problems demonstrating expert subject matter knowledge.
  • Develops and maintains data pipeline and reporting documentation.
  • Provides technical assistance on data management, quality assurance, and analysis using SQL, R, and Python.
  • Supports epidemiologists and data analysts with automated reporting pipelines and data visualizations.
  • Operates within the Reporting and Analytics Unit to respond to data-related needs for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.
  • Contributes to special projects related to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Public Health or related field required.
  • Expert knowledge of SQL, Python, or R programming.
  • Strong knowledge of public health surveillance data management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with web-based reporting systems and electronic laboratory reporting.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA requirements and protection of health information.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctoral Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related field preferred.
  • Experience developing and maintaining automated data pipelines preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of epidemiological/biostatistical methods preferred.
  • Prior knowledge of CalREDIE, CalCONNECT, or surveillance systems preferred.
  • Prior experience with electronic laboratory and case reporting data preferred.

Benefits

  • Remote work flexibility
  • Salary range of $90,000 to $95,000 annually depending on experience/qualifications
