About the position

The Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III position at TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division in Corpus Christi, TX, involves performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work on fleet vehicles and equipment. The role requires diagnosing and repairing heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction, as well as ensuring compliance with safety standards. Responsibilities

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Trains less experienced technicians (Equipment Mechanic II).
  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required (Equipment Mechanic II).
  • Leads and trains less experienced technicians (Equipment Mechanic III).
  • Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence (Equipment Mechanic III).

Requirements

  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic III: 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Valid driver's license required; must obtain a Class 'A' CDL within 120 days of employment.
  • Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed if performing State safety vehicle inspections.
