About the position

The City of Escondido is seeking a dedicated and skilled Equipment Mechanic I/II to join our Public Works Department within the Fleet Services Division. This position is crucial for maintaining the operational efficiency of our municipal services by providing preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, and motor sweepers. The Equipment Mechanic I is an entry-level position, while the Equipment Mechanic II operates at a journey level, requiring more independence and advanced skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing complex electronic and electrical systems, performing inspections, and ensuring that all city equipment is in optimal working condition. This role also involves maintaining accurate records of repairs and services performed, as well as participating in ongoing training and certification programs to enhance skills and knowledge in the field. As part of the progression criteria, Equipment Mechanic I incumbents are expected to advance to the II level after 24 months of successful performance, which includes acquiring a Master-Level ASE Mechanic Certification, completing specific training classes, and obtaining necessary licenses. The position requires a strong understanding of safety procedures, regulations, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment while also being capable of working independently when needed. Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections on all city equipment, including sedans, patrol cruisers, light and heavy-duty trucks, fire apparatus, and related equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair complex electronic and electrical systems, including sirens, emergency lighting, radios, computers, and other control systems.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and overhaul minor and major vehicle components, such as engines, transmissions, rear ends, transaxles, steering, brakes, suspension, and other related items.
  • Perform alignments and related repairs as needed.
  • Perform minor/major welding and fabrication.
  • Perform diagnostics of electronically controlled systems such as engines, fuel injection, and transmission systems.
  • Perform minor/major overhaul of braking systems.
  • Diagnose and repair starting and charging systems.
  • Operate motor equipment, including moving vehicles in and out of the shop, test drives, making service calls, and taking vehicles to vendors.
  • Maintain repair orders, list of parts, time sheets, and general records for repairs using keyboard or scanner.
  • Wash and fuel vehicles as well as pool vehicles.
  • Clean facility and fuel island.
  • Open and secure building facilities.
  • Help orient new employees as needed.
  • Provide vacation and temporary relief as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from the 12th grade or equivalent.
  • For Equipment Mechanic I: Equivalent to at least three years of experience in vehicle repair of heavy and light power-driven equipment, including at least one year as a journey-level mechanic.
  • For Equipment Mechanic II: Equivalent to 24 months at the level of Equipment Mechanic I with the City of Escondido, including progression criteria.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license at the time of application.

Nice-to-haves
