About the position

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking an Equipment Mechanic-in-Training or Equipment Mechanic to perform a variety of routine, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of various vehicles and equipment. This position offers an opportunity for growth, as it can be filled at either the entry-level or journey-level based on the applicant's qualifications. The role involves working under the supervision of the Fleet Services Coordinator and includes responsibilities such as performing repairs, conducting preventive maintenance, and providing emergency road service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform major and minor repairs and preventive maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Repair and maintain automobiles, trucks, fire trucks, and other City equipment.
  • Provide emergency road service on heavy equipment.
  • Test, repair, and install complex vehicle electronic components and wiring.
  • Repair and replace fuel systems and brake system components.
  • Adjust chains, belts, and attachments on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Design and fabricate modifications or additions according to user needs.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and databases.
  • Provide direction and training to assigned staff.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND completion of a two-year automotive technology course or six months of hands-on mechanic experience for Equipment Mechanic-in-Training.
  • Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND two years of experience as a mechanic-in-training or two years of journey-level experience for Equipment Mechanic.
  • Possession of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s) in automotive and/or truck repair.
  • State licenses for brake repair, pollution devices, and lamp adjustment.
  • Experience with heavy equipment.
