About the position

The City of Upland is recruiting for an Equipment Mechanic who will perform skilled technical diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on a variety of automotive, truck, tractors, and other light and heavy power-driven equipment. The role involves inspecting, diagnosing, and locating technical and electrical malfunctions on City vehicles and equipment, performing general maintenance, and related work as required. This is a full-time position with full benefits in the Public Works Department, working 10 hours a day, 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday).

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, and locate technical and electrical malfunctions on City automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
  • Determine extent of necessary repairs and schedule further work.
  • Overhaul, repair, maintain, and adjust a variety of gas and diesel powered equipment.
  • Operate and maintain hand, power, and shop tools and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform general maintenance including grease and lubrication, servicing batteries, and changing tires.
  • Read and interpret schematics, shop manuals, and other related materials.
  • Access technical information from automated databases.
  • Enter, retrieve, and generate vehicle and equipment reports from computer systems.
  • Respond to emergency service calls for repairs or towing.
  • Fabricate and modify parts and equipment; perform minor welding and cutting operations.
  • Maintain work, time, and material logs and records.
  • Assist other mechanics in major repairs as required.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Comply with safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Specialized training and certification in maintenance and repair of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in diagnostic and repair duties on vehicles and equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Class 'A' or Class 'B' California Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • State-mandated certifications required for specific vehicles or equipment.
  • Experience with computerized systems and software relevant to automotive repair.
