About the position

The Equipment Operator III (Water) position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of water and wastewater operations, including construction and maintenance projects. This role involves supervising and participating in various tasks related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of water systems, ensuring efficient and effective water services to the public.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment for construction, repair, and maintenance of water treatment and distribution systems.
  • Operates various equipment including backhoe, excavator, crane truck, dump truck, and trencher.
  • Collects samples and transports them to external laboratories for analysis.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation of directional bore equipment and mixes drilling fluid chemicals as needed.
  • Performs excavation, installation, and repair of water mains and service lines, including digging trenches and performing asphalt cuts.
  • Clears rights-of-way by removing debris, trees, and brush from easements.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles, reporting repair needs to the supervisor.
  • Directs the work of assigned personnel as required.
  • Locates underground utilities and performs grounds maintenance duties.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies and customer complaints, determining if additional support is needed.
  • Responds to storm and other emergency events as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One year of recent experience operating heavy construction equipment such as backhoes, excavators, and dump trucks.
  • Valid operator's driver license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of an ADEM Grade I Water certification.
  • Knowledge of water treatment and distribution systems.
