About the position

The Equipment Operator III position involves highly skilled work in operating a variety of power construction equipment and motorized vehicles for the Alachua County Department of Public Works. The role requires the operator to perform tasks such as excavating, moving, and grading earth, as well as erecting structural and reinforcing steel and pouring concrete or other hard surface paving materials. The position is essential during emergencies and requires a strong focus on customer service and organizational values.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various types of heavy construction equipment including finish motor graders, hydraulic excavators, and asphalt paving equipment.
  • Lead and direct the work of other employees on maintenance/construction sites when necessary.
  • Perform routine services and preventative maintenance on equipment to ensure good working order.
  • Conduct pre-operation checks of equipment and complete minor repair work as needed.
  • Perform manual tasks and labor when not operating equipment.
  • Exhibit a positive customer service focus and align decisions with core organizational values.

Requirements

  • Completion of eighth grade and two years of experience operating heavy and/or complex equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A valid State of Florida Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License with air brakes is required.
  • Must obtain an 'N' endorsement within thirty days of employment.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and physical examination, along with background checks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with asphalt equipment and material handling.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing the use of heavy equipment.
