About the position
The Underground Equipment Operator is an entry-level role focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This position requires working at various locations and may involve travel to other states based on customer demands. The operator will perform tasks safely around energized and de-energized systems, assisting with installations and repairs while maintaining equipment and tools in good working order.
Responsibilities
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground systems.
- Assist with installing underground transformers.
- Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labor as required.
- Understand proper use of company radio and operation of heavy equipment.
- Learn basic knowledge of materials used and identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Assist with the installation and hook up of a single-phase transformer.
- Work at heights and/or in confined spaces, understanding minimum approach distance.
- Check voltage on transformers and understand flag and tag procedures.
- Install and remove service as needed and inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Work outside frequently in inclement weather.
Requirements
- 5-year minimum of recent field experience.
- Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 60 days of employment.
- A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice when required.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Willing to work overtime when requested.
- Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
