About the position

The Equipment Operator at Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is responsible for processing scrap metals using various tools and equipment, including front end loaders. This role emphasizes safety, efficiency, and teamwork in a dynamic environment, ensuring the proper handling and sorting of materials while maintaining equipment and site cleanliness.

Responsibilities

• Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Remove hazards as identified and maintain cleanliness of the site.
• Switch rail cars and operate locomotives.
• Load and unload materials from various areas using mobile equipment or by hand.
• Sort recycled materials and metals to separate high-grade metals from non-conforming metals.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment including front end loaders, manlifts, and yard vehicles.
• Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping.
• Operate and maintain balers and manage finished bales inventory.
• Perform physical labor using standard hand tools and equipment.
• Identify scrap materials, including grade and type, and remove undesirable elements.
• Position trailers and containers around the yard and manage emptying of gaylord boxes.
• Remove fluids from incoming materials or vehicles as required.
• Assist mechanics in the maintenance of equipment.
• Interact with customers or drivers to provide assistance.
• Perform daily inspections of equipment.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma/GED or 1+ years of equipment operator experience.
• Ability to work independently.
• Must be able to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to follow oral and written communication.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
• Ability to endure physical and outdoor work on a daily basis.
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
• Must be able to work in an environment exposed to dust, dirt, vibrations, and extreme weather conditions.
