Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on various diesel and gasoline vehicles or equipment which may range from public safety vehicles, cars, trucks, buses, or equipment.
  • Conduct tune-ups and regular service checks, such as oil changes and fluid replacements.
  • Replace, adjust and repair various key vehicle and/or equipment components which may include, but are not limited to, hydraulic systems, suspension parts, fuel, electronics and cooling systems, electronics, and brakes.
  • Respond to road calls and provide on-site repairs for various vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist mechanics with more complex engine repairs and overhauls.
  • Diagnose minor defects and perform corrective actions to ensure vehicle reliability.
  • Complete daily reports and use computer software for basic data entry and record-keeping.
  • Possess knowledge of specialized tools, vehicle and equipment maintenance principles.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment safely.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent GED completion AND one (1) year of experience as an Equipment Service Worker I with the City of Fresno.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent GED completion AND two (2) years of continuous, full-time paid experience performing minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Completion of an Associate's Degree from an accredited college in Automotive Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology or Diesel Equipment Technology.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment and during the entire term of employment in the job class.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class B Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements within the probationary period, or within six (6) months after being assigned to an area requiring such license.
