About the position

The Equipment Technician RCS position at Houston Public Works involves performing restoration activities such as concrete and asphalt paving, landscaping repairs, and operating various tools and equipment. The role requires physical exertion and the ability to work in various weather conditions while ensuring safety and compliance with established standards. The technician will also act as a lead worker, assisting in training new personnel and communicating effectively with team members and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Perform restoration activities including concrete and asphalt paving, fencing, and landscaping repairs.
  • Transport equipment, tools, and materials to work locations using trucks and equipment.
  • Operate power and hand tools, and may operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and dump trucks.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and in safe working condition daily.
  • Conduct work zone traffic control during street repairs and tree/debris removal.
  • Prepare daily work orders, inspection sheets, and related documents.
  • Communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the public to ensure work is accomplished.
  • Investigate and respond to public complaints regarding work performed.
  • Observe and follow safety regulations.
  • Act as lead worker, making repair decisions and inspecting work sites.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, or ability to read, write, and follow instructions at a necessary level.
  • Six months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment.
  • Valid Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.
  • Depending on equipment operated, a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL).
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, forklifts, and dump trucks.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, and weekends in various weather conditions.
  • Experience in fencing and general carpentry using woodworking equipment.
