About the position

The Equipment Technician position involves entry-level skilled work in the maintenance and repair of light vehicles and heavy construction equipment. This role is designed for individuals looking to advance their careers within the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) without the need for competitive selection processes. The technician will work under moderate supervision, performing essential repairs and inspections to ensure equipment safety and operational standards are met.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and perform basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Inspect, service, repair, and overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drivelines, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, and ignition systems.
  • Repair and install hydraulic controls and tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Dismantle, repair, and reassemble air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders, and related equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, overhaul, and assemble automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
  • Complete mandated fleet inspections and ensure all equipment meets OSHA standards and all repairs and modifications are done in accordance with operational specifications and safety standards.
  • May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, or completion of a formal post-secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment-related repair (of at least 30 credit hours or one school year in duration).
  • One year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
  • A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver's license (CDL) exam is required prior to the hire date.
  • Must pass the driving portion of the Class B CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status within 60 days of hire into the position.
  • Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire into the position.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and medical-physical examination.
