About the position

Jefferies & Company, Inc. is seeking a highly motivated Equity Research Associate to support a senior biotechnology analyst in covering mid- and small-cap biotech companies. This role is pivotal in conducting proprietary research and evaluating drug pipelines, which involves analyzing scientific literature, attending medical conferences, and consulting with industry experts. The candidate will be responsible for writing comprehensive research reports for initiations of coverage, performing deep dive data analyses, and providing competitive landscaping and updates on industry and company news. The associate will delve into intellectual property matters and follow patent litigation concerning pharmaceuticals, which is crucial for understanding the competitive landscape. Additionally, the role requires building and maintaining financial models and creating PowerPoint presentations to communicate findings effectively. The associate will also interface with company management teams, internal sales and trading personnel, and institutional investors, making strong communication skills essential. The ideal candidate should be motivated to excel in the sell-side industry and possess a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team. A deep understanding of drug development and the FDA-approval process for pharmacologic treatments is desirable, along with at least one year of experience in healthcare investment research, whether on the sell-side, buy-side, or in investment banking. Proficiency in written and verbal communication is critical, as is the ability to produce high-quality sell-side reports and detailed financial models.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct proprietary research and evaluate drug pipelines by analyzing scientific literature, attending medical conferences, and consulting industry experts.
  • Write research reports for initiations of coverage, deep dive data analyses, competitive landscaping, and industry/company news.
  • Delve into intellectual property and follow patent litigation concerning pharmaceuticals.
  • Build and maintain financial models and PowerPoint decks.
  • Conceive and execute differentiated project ideas.
  • Interface with company management teams, internal sales and trading personnel, and institutional investors.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience in healthcare investment research (sell side, buy side, investment banking, etc).
  • Sharp analytical skills in dissecting preclinical and clinical data.
  • Deep understanding of, or experience with, drug development and the FDA-approval process for pharmacologic treatments is desirable.
  • High proficiency in written/verbal communication.
  • Ability to type more than 120 words per minute.
  • Experience writing quality sell-side reports, producing PowerPoints, and creating detailed financial models (e.g., functioning three-statement models, DCFs, market models, etc).
  • Experience building financial models using Excel is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in biotechnology or related fields.
