About the position

The Emergency Room Technician II (ER Tech II) at Baton Rouge General plays a crucial role in the Emergency Department by working collaboratively with registered nurses and physicians to deliver high-quality patient care. This part-time position is designed for individuals who are committed to improving the quality of life for patients and their families. The ER Tech II is responsible for performing both direct and indirect patient care tasks, ensuring that all actions are in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. The role requires a strong focus on patient safety, effective communication, and adherence to compliance standards. The technician will assist in the initial assessment and management of patients experiencing illness or injury, report changes in patient conditions, and provide direct treatment care such as splinting, dressing, and catheterization. Additionally, the ER Tech II will maintain accurate patient records, monitor and restock supplies, and practice appropriate safety and infection control procedures. This position is essential in facilitating patient flow through the Emergency Department and ensuring a safe and clean environment for both patients and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform direct and indirect patient care as directed by registered nurse and/or physician.
  • Assist in the initial assessment and management of emergency patients according to specified protocols.
  • Report changes in patient conditions to the primary nurse in a timely manner.
  • Provide direct treatment care in accordance with hospital policy, including splints, dressings, and urinary catheterization.
  • Assist with the collection and transport of specimens following universal precaution policies.
  • Support the admission, discharge, and transfer of patients to the unit.
  • Perform effectively in emergency response situations according to hospital policies.
  • Assist patients with elimination needs and provide support during minor surgeries.
  • Keep patients and families informed about treatment processes and any delays.
  • Perform venipuncture for blood samples after demonstrating competency.
  • Maintain patient records and charts to ensure accurate medical treatment documentation.
  • Monitor and restock supplies and equipment as needed for each shift.
  • Practice appropriate safety, environmental, and infection control procedures.
  • Assist nursing staff with ensuring the safety of psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a medical assistant, nursing assistant, phlebotomy, or EMT course.
  • Certified Medical Assistant or 6 months of acute care ED experience or First Responder certification.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certification or Basic EMT Certification or Military Medic experience or Phlebotomy Certification or Nursing Student with completion of fundamental nursing clinical in RN program preferred.
  • Crisis Prevention Training within six months of employment.

Nice-to-haves
