About the position

The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Paraprofessional plays a vital role in supporting both students and teachers within the classroom environment. This position is designed to facilitate a conducive learning atmosphere for students with special needs, ensuring they can access and participate in their educational activities effectively. The ESE Paraprofessional will assist in various tasks that are essential for the daily functioning of the classroom, including the preparation of instructional materials and the supervision of students during transitions between classes. In addition to providing in-classroom assistance, the ESE Paraprofessional is responsible for addressing the physical needs of students, which may include personal care tasks such as feeding, diapering, and assisting with mobility. The role requires a collaborative approach, working closely with instructional staff, support personnel, and administrative staff to create a supportive educational environment. Participation in staff development activities is also a key component of this position, ensuring that the paraprofessional remains informed about best practices in special education. The ESE Paraprofessional will also monitor students during lunch and assist in maintaining a clean and organized classroom environment. This includes sanitizing areas as necessary and ensuring that all supplies and equipment are properly stored and retrieved before and after activities. The position requires a commitment to the well-being of students and the ability to implement activities as directed by instructional staff, making it a crucial role within the educational framework of the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the cleanup, storing, and retrieval of supplies and equipment before and after activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of instructional materials, bulletin boards, etc., as requested by the instructional staff.
  • Escort students to support service rooms (i.e., nurse, speech, school social worker) when appropriate.
  • Supervise students during mainstream activities or changes in classes.
  • Work cooperatively with instructional, support staff, and administrative staff.
  • Participate in staff development activities.
  • Care for students' physical needs, including washing, lifting, feeding, taking to toilet, diapering, and changing clothes as required by the student's physical condition.
  • Monitor students to and from the lavatory as appropriate.
  • During the lunch period, monitor and/or feed students as physical condition dictates.
  • Implement activities as directed by the instructional staff.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and clean area for classroom and lunch activities, sanitizing as necessary.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of classroom activities and/or individual and small group instruction under the direction/supervision of the instructional staff.
  • Monitor students at the end of the day while they await bus or taxicab.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Administrator or designee.

Requirements

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a high school diploma.
