About the position

The ESH Manager at Layton Construction is responsible for implementing corporate, field, and office Environmental Safety and Health (ESH) policies and procedures across assigned business units and project sites. This role focuses on establishing a safety culture, managing safety programs, providing regulatory guidance, and ensuring compliance with safety standards to minimize risks and enhance workplace safety.

Responsibilities

  • Establish safety culture within assigned business units.
  • Manage safety programs on all projects, including Owner Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP).
  • Provide regulatory and policy review, interpretation, and technical advice.
  • Recommend improvements to ESH tools, processes, policies, and training.
  • Review leading indicators from audits and injury statistics to propose risk reduction programs.
  • Provide monthly statistical information to the ESH Director for safety program planning.
  • Monitor new legislation affecting safety policies and propose necessary changes.
  • Monitor workers' compensation issues and collaborate with the ESH Director.
  • Conduct incident review meetings to train on accident avoidance.
  • Oversee monthly audit programs to document compliance and safety program effectiveness.
  • Implement training programs to achieve injury-free environments and OSHA/MSHA compliance.
  • Oversee the company incentive program for safety improvements.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings to address project safety needs.
  • Ensure accurate and prompt accident reporting with prevention measures.
  • Assist with injury management and cost control for industrial medical care.
  • Support project supervision and ESH Coordinators with safety enforcement and disciplinary measures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Safety & Health or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of experience in commercial construction.
  • Excellent knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail and ability to accomplish tasks thoroughly.
  • Good presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to use safety equipment such as gas detectors and noise monitors.

Nice-to-haves

  • ASP and CSP accreditations preferred.
  • Previous OCIP experience preferred.
  • Fluency in English and basic Spanish preferred.
