About the position

The ESL Instructor position is a part-time role focused on providing English as a Second Language (ESL) and Family Literacy instruction tailored to meet the individual academic needs of students. The instructor will work with at-risk students and displaced workers, preparing them for higher education or entry into the job market. The role involves delivering a self-paced program that assists students in learning the English language, covering essential skills such as grammar, writing, reading, speaking, listening, pronunciation, and accent reduction. The instructor will also facilitate instruction aimed at enhancing students' academic skills and will maintain detailed portfolios for each student, documenting their attendance and academic progress. Additionally, the instructor will introduce American civic values, culture, and customs to newcomers in the United States, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience. The ESL Instructor will report to the ELA Coordinator and the Director of College and Career Readiness and HRD. Responsibilities include developing course outlines and lesson plans that align with NC Content Standards, securing educational resources, assessing students, and planning individualized programs of study. The instructor will also be responsible for maintaining student files, tracking attendance, completing required data forms, and participating in professional development activities. This position is part of a continuous recruitment effort to build a pool of qualified applicants for future openings as student enrollment fluctuates.

Responsibilities

  • Providing ELA instruction for College and Career Readiness students
  • Developing course outlines/lesson plans which follow NC Content Standards
  • Preparing daily lesson plans for regular instructors or substitutes
  • Securing appropriate educational resources for diverse learning styles
  • Submitting a list of supplies/materials needed for the classroom
  • Assessing students and planning their individual programs of study
  • Maintaining files on students to document their progress
  • Tracking student hours for performance measures
  • Completing student data forms required by the state Literacy Education Information System (LEIS)
  • Submitting pay and attendance sheets to the College and Career Readiness Chief HSE Examiner/AHS Coordinator
  • Entering student hours daily through Self-Service
  • Following up on students without placement tests or those who left the program
  • Attending staff meetings, professional development, and workshops
  • Participating in college planning and serving on committees
  • Completing twelve hours of professional development annually
  • Obtaining a professional development credential within two years of hire
  • Adhering to the College and Career Readiness Calendar
  • Completing other duties as directed
  • Maintaining confidentiality of student information
  • Keeping a clean and safe work area

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and write as applicable to subject area
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries and/or complaints from students and staff
  • Ability to effectively present information to students and staff
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations required to tabulate student scores
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of information

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Adult Education with teaching experience
  • ESL Certification and/or experience teaching English as a second language
  • Experience teaching English to speakers of other languages
  • Bilingual or understanding of other languages
