About the position
The ESL Online Instructor at Kirkwood Community College is responsible for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to students enrolled in the college's Secondary Programs. This part-time position requires the instructor to conduct classes online via Zoom, while also being available for in-person meetings and events at various Kirkwood locations. The role emphasizes supporting students in their transition from ESL courses to work training and higher education opportunities, contributing to the college's mission of continuous improvement and inclusivity.
Responsibilities
- Assist students with coursework in various formats including individualized instruction and large group courses.
- Collaborate with fellow instructors on curriculum development and student advising.
- Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students.
- Provide interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ESL standards.
- Track attendance daily and submit reports.
- Respond promptly to communications from program directors and coordinators.
- Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
- Prior experience teaching adult ESL/ABE learners or working with adult immigrants.
- Prior experience teaching ESL or foreign language at any age.
Nice-to-haves
- Bachelor's or master's degree in TESOL, Education, Foreign Language Teaching or related field.
- TESOL training/certification such as K-12 certification in ESL or TEFL certification.
