About the position

The ESL Teacher position is a long-term substitute assignment within the Newtown Public Schools, specifically designed to cover a leave replacement through the end of January 2025. The role involves teaching English as a Second Language to students across multiple elementary and middle schools, ensuring that instruction meets state and federal standards. The position emphasizes the importance of a diverse workforce and aims to support students from various backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Screen Home Language Surveys and administer the English Language Proficiency assessment for eligible students
• Administer annual state English Language Proficiency assessment
• Plan and provide instruction that meets state and federal standards aligned to CELP Standards
• Set high standards for student performance and achievement while recognizing variations in students' backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles
• Develop and deliver lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
• Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress with evidence of student growth
• Seek support from district specialists when concerns regarding student progress arise
• Attend IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings for student assessment and program planning as requested
• Establish partnerships with the community in support of the academic program
• Travel to/from school district buildings and professional meetings as required

Requirements

• CT Teaching Certificate
• TESOL endorsement (111) preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of subject matter
• Outstanding personal/interpersonal communication skills
• Experience with technology in facilitating instruction
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain concise records
• Superior problem-solving skills and ability to analyze data and create action plans
