About the position

The Head Custodian at Challenger Secondary School is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security of the school facility. This position requires a commitment to providing a safe and sanitary environment conducive to student learning and support functions. The Head Custodian will oversee a small custodial staff, typically fewer than three custodians, and will be instrumental in preparing the building for school and public events. The role involves a variety of cleaning and custodial services, including vacuuming, dusting, mopping, sweeping, and maintaining bathrooms and showers. The Head Custodian will also be responsible for opening and securing the facility, setting up for events, and ensuring effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public regarding safety and security matters. In addition to routine cleaning tasks, the Head Custodian will conduct fire and earthquake drills, accompany fire marshals during inspections, and prepare necessary reports. The position also includes minor repairs, such as painting and fixing leaks, as well as major summer cleaning to prepare the facility for the new school year. The Head Custodian will determine cleaning areas and assignments, maintain custodial budgets, and order supplies as needed. This role requires a proactive approach to facility maintenance and the ability to respond to emergencies as they arise. The Head Custodian will also supervise student helpers and may assist with grounds maintenance to ensure the school facility remains attractive and functional. Overall, the Head Custodian plays a vital role in the daily operations of the school, ensuring that the environment is safe, clean, and welcoming for students, staff, and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans specific areas and oversees the cleaning of assigned school or comparable facility to provide a sanitary and safe environment for student learning and support functions.
  • Opens facility; turns on lights and equipment; takes out mailbox and flag. Opens and/or locks building doors and operates alarm system for security according to established procedures.
  • Sets up and takes down a wide variety of equipment and furniture for events, assemblies, food service, public use of school facilities and other functions; moves a variety of equipment and furniture as needed to meet the needs of students, staff and the public.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, parents, staff and the public for safety, security and public relations.
  • Conducts fire and earthquake drills; accompanies fire marshal during inspections; prepares necessary reports. Inspects emergency lighting and batteries.
  • Provides direction, trains and oversees work of night shift staff of fewer than three custodians; resolves or reports personnel conflicts. Keeps custodial time records.
  • Makes minor repairs, such as painting, plastering, stain and gum removal, fixing chair feet and table legs, replacing acoustical tile, clearing drains and toilets and fixing leaks.
  • Performs major summer cleaning of facility, including floor finishes, furniture, equipment, painting and repairs to prepare buildings for the start of the student school year.
  • Determines cleaning areas and assignments. Assigns overtime, fills out variance and vacation slips; monitors time cards.
  • Sets up and cleans lunchroom for breakfast and lunch. May be required to monitor student behavior.
  • Maintains custodial budget; orders custodial supplies. Keeps records of work orders, inspections, and building usage. May schedule and coordinate building usage.
  • Maintains and distributes building keys. Prepares signage and changes reader board.
  • Operates heating ventilation systems and controls in facility; maintains boilers, pumps, and compressors as required.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years' experience as a custodian, with two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity; experience in a school facility preferred.
  • Ability to distinguish cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Skill in operating a variety of cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Ability to provide lead direction to others.
  • Knowledge of routine repairs and maintenance, including some painting, carpentry, plumbing and other general maintenance.
  • Ability to move and position furniture and equipment.
  • Ability to operate computerized HVAC system.
  • Knowledge of safety and security procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the public.
  • Effective oral communications skills.
