About the position

The Estimator position involves analyzing project plans and specifications to prepare accurate job cost estimates and bid packages. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including general contractors and vendors, to ensure cost-effective project execution. The Estimator will also participate in planning meetings, assist project managers, and ensure quality assurance throughout the estimating process.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate project plans, specifications, and requirements to prepare job cost estimates.
  • Prepare conceptual estimates and budgets.
  • Conduct accurate quantity take-offs and unit pricing using established production rates.
  • Establish profit and overhead for projects as requested.
  • Utilize the Request for Information (RFI) process for missing information.
  • Inform the VP of Estimating of any inaccuracies or omissions in plans and specifications.
  • Maintain correspondence records and notes for each project bid.
  • Review and analyze quotes to ensure compliance with project standards.
  • Communicate with general contractors, owners, vendors, and trades.
  • Secure vendor pricing and select cost-effective vendors and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to cover project scope efficiently.
  • Respond to vendor or subcontractor inquiries and resolve issues promptly.
  • Document vendor and subcontractor quotes in writing.
  • Apply project principles, policies, and procedures during work.
  • Participate in and may lead weekly planning meetings with estimating staff.
  • Assist project managers with buyouts and purchasing on projects.
  • Ensure quality assurance and quality checks are in place.
  • Conduct job close-out and reviews.
  • Attend pre-job meetings and estimating meetings.
  • Participate in project job walks as assigned.
  • Assist in the collection and review of incoming quotes on bid days.
  • Provide value engineering as requested.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in construction.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in estimating.
  • Degree or certification in a related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of Constructware and/or Viewpoint.
  • 5+ years of formal experience in estimating commercial construction projects or managing engineering design or construction.
  • Professional education and/or experience in construction or relevant industries.
  • Thorough understanding of estimating and/or construction management.
  • Significant experience in industrial and commercial construction design/construction.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent math and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ability to learn new software quickly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in overseeing large engineering projects.
  • Experience in securing vendor pricing and supervision of estimators or interns.
