About the position

The ETL Developer position at the University of Chicago is a critical role within the Center for Research Informatics (CRI), which operates under the Biological Sciences Division (BSD). The CRI is dedicated to providing informatics resources and services that align with the mission of the academic medical center. The incumbent will be responsible for fulfilling data requests for the Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW) and supporting ETL architecture and development. This involves understanding and implementing data extractions, transformations, and loads, as well as writing SQL code to incorporate new data sources into data warehouses and affiliated data marts, both local and distributed. The role requires collaboration with existing teams to further development according to established standards and conventions. In addition to ETL responsibilities, the position demands data management expertise, including data source acquisition and positioning. The incumbent will provide ongoing feedback and support to expand available data sources while enhancing the team's understanding of existing data sources. Responsibilities also include transforming and loading data into both standardized and unstandardized data models and platforms, as well as creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation. The ETL Developer will perform data analysis to answer research questions under the guidance of University faculty members and support quality improvement initiatives and external reporting. The role also involves translating technical specifications into SQL code, generating data deliverables, and conducting code reviews. An ideal candidate will quickly master medical terminology related to data requests, communicate effectively with business analysts and clients, and write optimized SQL queries for data deliverables. Proficiency in R and Python for analysis, as well as Tableau for data visualization, is also essential. Prior to delivering data, the incumbent will assist with data quality checks to ensure that each deliverable meets the original request specifications and maintains the highest quality standards. This position is situated within a federal recharge center, emphasizing the importance of accuracy and efficiency in data management.

Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze healthcare and other related data to identify and interpret trends in support of data requests, business cases, and proposed projects.
  • Design, construct, test, and maintain data warehouse and related functionality including extraction and transformation of data using SSIS.
  • Design, develop, and test business intelligence outputs (including visualization) to ensure useful and insightful information using software including R, Python, Tableau, and/or Excel to support research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Test and validate data with the purpose of understanding and making conclusions to support decision-making processes.
  • Manage a variety of information systems and data files, including large and complex files: analyzing file structure, using and creating file layouts, transforming raw data into finished products.
  • Monitor for timely and accurate completion of select datasets.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives to enhance data management and reporting to support research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of Data Scientists, Project Managers, and Developers to ensure high-quality data delivery to faculty.
  • Proactively identify issues and opportunities to improve data systems and related policies as an aspect of data governance.
  • Investigates, analyzes and resolves day-to-day technical problems using standard procedures.
  • Works with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements for developmental programs. Receives a moderate level of guidance to design applications to meet University and business requirements.
  • Performs code testing on components and works to ensure that appropriate implementation standards are met. Evaluates design alternatives for development cost and solutions using various methods.
  • Supports and maintains existing applications. Works with web developers and responds to requests from users.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in a related field.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
