About the position

The Technical Writer/Event Planner is a dual role that provides essential support services across both technical writing and event planning domains. This position is responsible for creating and coordinating written content for various publications, journals, SharePoint sites, and briefings. The individual will collaborate closely with subject matter experts and stakeholders to develop comprehensive event agendas, presentation materials, and promotional content, ensuring that all materials are accurate, engaging, and aligned with the client's objectives. In addition to writing responsibilities, the Technical Writer/Event Planner will assist in the logistical planning of conferences, seminars, and workshops. This includes coordinating conference approvals, selecting venues, scheduling events, managing branding and printing requirements, and coordinating speakers. The role demands strong writing and organizational skills, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The estimated starting salary range for this position is between $73,000 to $80,000, with pay commensurate with experience. Full-time benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401K, and other possible benefits, which are subject to change with or without notice.

Responsibilities

  • Revises or writes standardized material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, pamphlets, catalogs, and related technical and administrative publications.
  • Receives technical direction from supervisor or AF client, following instructions with limited oversight while maintaining detailed status on open taskings.
  • Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Maintains records and files of work and revisions, selects photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material, and assists in laying out material for publication.
  • Arranges for typing, duplication, and distribution of material, and may assist in writing speeches, articles, and public or employee relations releases.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for planning and hosting large-scale events, including topic development, branding, competitive venue selection, hotel and virtual platform logistics, managing volunteers, and cost reporting.
  • Hosts quarterly, monthly, and weekly Event Planning Meetings with government senior leaders to provide status on open actions, assign new actions, and troubleshoot obstacles.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 10 years of experience in conference event planning.
  • Working knowledge of writing agency communication initiatives, including organizational newsletters, articles, blogs, and announcements with eye-catching creativity.
  • Ability to plan and execute large (300+) professional-level conference events, both in-person and virtual, is a must.
  • Knowledge of planning AF Conference Events and protocol for submission of DoD Conference Approval Packages is desired.
  • Experience in developing training programs for personnel in project management.
  • Knowledge of AF Design & Construction Program is desired.
  • Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to overcome obstacles and think outside the box, providing solutions to clients.
  • Ability to devise a scheduling plan that allows for incremental product reviews prior to final delivery.
  • Strong communication skills to interact logically and efficiently with government senior officials.
  • Ability to multitask and coordinate access to facilities, set up briefings, gather data, and conduct interviews in preparation for technical writing.
  • Proficiency in using computer software including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and audio-visual setups, including Adobe Connect for video teleconferences.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal and be a US Citizen able to pass a National Agency Check Investigations (NACI)/SF85 background check.
