About the position

The Event Worker/Custodian at Middlebury Athletic Center is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy environment for students and staff. This position operates on a second shift schedule from Saturday to Wednesday, ensuring that all custodial duties are performed efficiently and effectively. The role involves working collaboratively with other custodial staff to uphold the cleanliness and functionality of the school facilities. Essential functions include a variety of cleaning tasks such as dusting, mopping, scrubbing, and waxing floors, as well as vacuuming carpets and emptying wastebaskets. The custodian will also be responsible for stocking supplies, disinfecting restrooms, and performing minor repairs as needed. Additionally, the custodian will assist in setting up for events, which may involve moving furniture and cleaning up after events. The position requires a proactive approach to maintenance, including reporting equipment failures and submitting supply requests to supervisors. The custodian must also ensure that all areas, including restrooms and common spaces, are kept clean and organized, contributing to a positive environment for students and staff alike.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and healthy school environment for students and staff.
  • Inform supervisor of equipment failure and needed repairs.
  • Clean, dust mop, scrub, and wax or buff resilient floors as needed.
  • Dry mop floors in rooms, hallways, or any hard surfaced floor.
  • Wet mop as needed and vacuum carpeting in assigned areas.
  • Empty wastebaskets and dispose of refuse in dumpster or trash compactor.
  • Stock machines, towel dispensers, and soap dispensers.
  • Scrub and disinfect shower rooms if assigned.
  • Change incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Clean whiteboards and submit requests for supplies to the supervisor.
  • Clean lockers, walls, water fountains, sinks, bowls, and glass mirrors.
  • Clean snow and ice from all walks and entrances as needed.
  • Clean air diffusers, lights, ceiling vent grills, and sprinkler heads as assigned.
  • Vacuum swimming pool on a regular schedule if assigned.
  • Dust all surfaces that may collect dust.
  • Be accountable for additional minor repairs and maintenance to building, equipment, and furniture.
  • Clean chairs, desks, and tabletops in classrooms and office areas.
  • Secure the building before leaving after each workday.
  • Operate floor scrubber and buffer.
  • Clean and stock restroom areas and keep custodial storage areas clean.
  • Clean glass in windows both inside and outside.
  • Set up for events, including moving tables and chairs, and clean up after events.
  • Assist students with lockers as needed and clean up body fluids or excrements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One to three months of related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Valid state driver's license required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and present information effectively.
  • Mathematical skills to perform basic calculations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in custodial work or maintenance is a plus.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
