About the position

The University of Washington's Department of Global Health is seeking a dedicated Events and Communications Specialist to join their team. The position involves collaboration with various communicators across the Schools of Public Health and Medicine, ensuring that the department's initiatives are effectively communicated through various channels including email, social media, websites, and events. The Events and Communications Specialist will report directly to the Communications Manager and will be responsible for managing a variety of tasks related to event planning and communication strategies. This includes creating and executing events aimed primarily at faculty and staff, managing newsletters, overseeing social media content, and maintaining the department's website. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Responsibilities

  • Create, implement, manage, execute, and evaluate DGH events for faculty and staff, including both in-person and virtual events.
  • Plan and manage all event logistics, including contacting speakers, compiling materials, coordinating registration, and managing vendors.
  • Manage special event RSVP and attendance processes, including arrangements for VIP attendees.
  • Recruit and train event volunteers and student workers for event execution.
  • Provide operational support to ensure events run smoothly, including troubleshooting issues on-site or remotely.
  • Manage and publish department newsletters, including content curation and layout design.
  • Develop and maintain a social media content calendar aligned with department goals.
  • Oversee department social media channels, creating original content and monitoring engagement metrics.
  • Maintain the DGH internet and intranet, ensuring information is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Perform other responsibilities as needed, including writing, editing, and administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, public health, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience working on communications and marketing platforms, including social media and event management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated success in problem-solving and taking initiative in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with senior-level personnel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with marketing platforms such as Marketo, Hootsuite, or Mail Chimp.
  • Experience managing events such as fundraising dinners or public lectures.
