About the position

The Ex Ed Interpreter for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and other school personnel. This position is essential for ensuring that these students receive the support they need to thrive academically and socially within the school environment. The interpreter not only provides interpreting services but also engages in tutoring and participates in educational team meetings, contributing to a collaborative approach to education.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication for students with hearing impairments in academic and non-academic settings.
  • Demonstrate sign language skills at a level equivalent to the high school curriculum and pass an in-house competency assessment.
  • Use interpreting strategies and techniques effectively.
  • Provide academic assistance to students with hearing impairments.
  • Accompany assigned students site to site, including field trips and extracurricular activities.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as needed for the deaf education teacher and other teachers serving hearing impaired students.
  • Prepare and receive various documents pertaining to student instruction and school operations.
  • Operate various equipment and tools associated with projects and work activities.
  • Communicate with supervisors, school officials, teachers, students, parents, vendors, and the community to coordinate work activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, IEP-Team meetings, or other required meetings.
  • Follow established procedures to ensure assigned areas are safe.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors, administrators, employees, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.

Requirements

  • Hold a School Service Personnel License as an Education Interpreter (#147) or meet specific criteria for non-licensed educational interpreters.
  • Obtain a passing score on the written portion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
  • Achieve a minimum score of 3.0 on the performance assessment portion of the EIPA.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students who have a variety of disabilities.
  • Training in or willingness to be trained in nonviolent crisis intervention techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in tutoring or educational support roles.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology for students with disabilities.
