About the position

The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for the position of Examinations Editor in the Office of State Assessment. This office is responsible for the development and statewide administration of all State examinations for elementary, intermediate, and high school students. The Examinations Editor will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of examination materials, which are essential for assessing student performance across New York State. In this role, the Examinations Editor will supervise the work of assistant editing staff, ensuring that all editorial tasks are completed according to established guidelines and deadlines. The editor will be responsible for editing assigned examinations and supplemental materials, reviewing work in progress, and assisting the test development team at various stages of development. A key aspect of this position involves maintaining the security of examinations and managing files related to examinations and field tests. Additionally, the Examinations Editor will assist in training new staff and will work closely with vendors to proofread translated and Braille versions of exams, ensuring that all materials are accurate and accessible to all students. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the educational assessment process in New York State, ensuring that examinations are not only accurate but also fair and equitable for all students. Responsibilities

  • Supervising the work of assistant editing staff, including the preparation of electronic reports as required.
  • Editing assigned examinations and supplemental materials according to established guidelines.
  • Assisting the test development team through different stages of development by reviewing work in progress.
  • Monitoring progress of examinations and materials to ensure assignments are completed in accordance with established deadlines.
  • Assisting the test development team in maintaining strict security of examinations.
  • Maintaining files of examinations and field tests.
  • Assisting with training of new assistant editing and clerical staff.
  • Working with staff and vendors on translated and Braille versions of exams to proofread and check artwork, front cover, numbering, etc.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 24 semester credit hours in English.
  • Two years of professional experience where the primary responsibility involved editing, including reviewing and revising factual written material for publication.
  • Experience ensuring that typed or printed materials are error-free and completing editorial work to meet established deadlines.
  • Current NYSED State employees must have one year of permanent competitive service as an Assistant Examinations Editor.
  • Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as an Examinations Editor for reassignment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in educational assessment or testing environments.
  • Familiarity with state education policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Braille and translated materials for examinations.
