About the position

The Exceptional Children Personal Care Assistant plays a vital role in supporting teachers and therapists in the daily care and educational activities of children with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities. This position requires a compassionate individual who can assist students in various tasks, ensuring their safety and well-being while promoting their independence and development.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers and therapists in daily classroom activities.
• Support students with gross motor activities such as grasping, crawling, and walking.
• Aid students with fine motor activities including playing with toys and cutting.
• Help students with personal hygiene tasks like dressing, eating, grooming, and toileting.
• Assist students with mobility and basic communication skills.
• Monitor the safety and well-being of students in all areas of the school environment.
• Record student behavior, progress, and other related data.
• Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, and play periods.
• Serve as a bus monitor if applicable.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma required.
• Two-year Associate's Degree preferred, with an emphasis in mathematics, reading, writing, and content knowledge.
• Ability to maintain composure in difficult situations.
• Strong verbal communication skills in English.
• Knowledge of care necessary for individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to work with disabled children ranging from 3 to 21 years of age for extended periods.
• Ability to relate to and interact with disabled children.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Ability to work cooperatively with other school personnel.

Nice-to-haves

• Completion of ETTP course and possession of a dated certificate for promotion eligibility.
