About the position

The Senior Advisor to the Vice Chancellor/CFO for Financial Systems at UCLA will play a pivotal role in advising the Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer on the selection, implementation, and maintenance of financial systems. This includes overseeing budget, planning, reporting, and business information tools, as well as enterprise resource planning systems such as Oracle and PeopleSoft. The Senior Advisor will work closely with campus senior leaders and the broader campus community to enhance the strategic management of the University’s resources. This position is integral to the planning, design, and construction of all campus capital projects, ensuring that financial systems align with the university's strategic goals. In this role, the Senior Advisor will represent the Vice Chancellor in daily operations and collaborate with Associate Vice Chancellors to implement strategies that improve financial management through technology. The Vice Chancellor/CFO organization comprises six departments with a substantial budget of $110 million for the 2023-24 fiscal year and approximately 400 staff members. The Senior Advisor will be responsible for providing recommendations and implementing agreed-upon strategies to enhance the university's financial systems and processes. The position requires a strong understanding of financial technology systems and the ability to work with various stakeholders to drive improvements. The Senior Advisor will also lead change management initiatives, particularly in adopting new financial systems and processes, and will analyze complex financial data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the Senior Advisor will need to translate technical information into business terms for various audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal advisor to the Vice Chancellor/CFO regarding financial systems.
  • Oversee the selection, implementation, and maintenance of financial systems including budget, planning, and reporting tools.
  • Collaborate with campus senior leaders to improve the strategic management of the University's resources.
  • Represent the Vice Chancellor in day-to-day operations and work with Associate Vice Chancellors.
  • Work closely with campus Information Technology Services and CFOs to enhance the use of technology in financial management.
  • Provide recommendations and implement strategies for financial system improvements.
  • Lead change management initiatives for the adoption of new financial systems and processes.
  • Analyze complex financial data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of experience advising senior Finance leadership at the Associate Vice Chancellor level at a major research-intensive public university with an annual budget of more than $4B on financial technology systems.
  • Experience with Oracle and PeopleSoft enterprise resource planning environments.
  • Experience implementing non-Oracle or PeopleSoft enterprise reporting software modules, such as WorkDay or OneStream.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to align financial systems and processes with the organization's strategic goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information into business terms.
  • Skill in leading change management initiatives, particularly in the adoption of new financial systems and processes.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and systems to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong problem-solving ability to address system inefficiencies and recommend solutions.
