About the position

As an Executive Commercial Lines Underwriter, you will play a crucial role in underwriting risk for our commercial lines insurance policies, which include General Liability, Worker's Compensation, Property, and Commercial Auto insurance. This position is based in our Eastern Regional Office in New Hartford, NY, and operates in a hybrid work environment. You will be responsible for managing a high-volume agency assignment with increased authority limits, preparing materials for agency reviews, and collaborating with account underwriters to improve agency production and loss ratios. In this role, you will analyze and evaluate new submissions and renewal accounts to determine the acceptability of risks within the parameters outlined in the Underwriting Authority CL Underwriter Document. You will utilize your expertise to evaluate risks and determine appropriate coverage while ensuring the utmost satisfaction for our insureds. Your responsibilities will also include monitoring and influencing the book of business placed with the company, executing agency action plans to improve profitability, and cultivating strong business relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Commercial Lines marketplace and products, excellent analytical and decision-making skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with agents and internal partners. You will be expected to anticipate and meet customer needs, adjust priorities as necessary, and display a proactive and resourceful approach to your work. This position offers a competitive salary range and is bonus eligible, reflecting the employee's experience, geographic location, education, and other qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite commercial lines insurance policies including General Liability, Worker's Compensation, Property, and Commercial Auto insurance.
  • Manage a high-volume agency assignment with increased authority limits.
  • Prepare materials for agency reviews and collaborate with account underwriters on agency production and loss ratio improvement plans.
  • Analyze and evaluate new submissions and renewal accounts to determine risk acceptability.
  • Monitor and influence the book of business placed with the company to ensure asset protection.
  • Execute agency action plans to improve profitability of the book of business.
  • Cultivate strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate underwriting standards, declination reasons, and coverage advantages to agents and internal partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Commercial Lines Middle Market Underwriting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of General Liability, Worker's Compensation, Property, and Commercial Auto lines of business.
  • Proven track record of successful underwriting and portfolio management in the middle market segment.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
