About the position

Building on our legacy of innovative treatments for a range of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic conditions, our R&D strategy takes a holistic view of the needs of people with metabolic diseases such as diabetes, who often have multiple, related conditions. We are pursuing the next wave of innovative medicines for obesity, kidney, and liver diseases - including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). We are looking for a senior leader with clinical development and operational experience who can drive our strategy to transform the lives of patients with cardio-renal-metabolic diseases and impact generations. The Head of Clinical Development & Operations - Cardio Renal Metabolic (Head CD&O CRM) is a value creator, innovator, and developer of world-class clinical program execution paths across the entire Therapeutic Area (TA). This role serves as a moderator and facilitator for ensuring clinical execution excellence within a given TA. The Head CD&O-CRM is nominated for each of the Therapeutic Areas as a bridge connecting strategy with execution excellence. Reporting into the Medicine organization, the Head CD&O-CRM is a member of the TA Medicine Leadership Team, providing operational input into the TA Medicine strategy. Additionally, the Head CD&O-CRM acts as a functional manager for Clinical Development Operations Lead (CDOL) nominated at the program level. Responsibilities

  • Accountable for proactive development of operational strategy for accelerated and efficient execution of clinical development programs within CRM, focusing on being above industry benchmark for key performance indicators.
  • Accountable for the governance of clinical program execution within CRM.
  • In alignment with CRM Medicine and Global Medical Affairs, drive opportunities for engagement and collaboration with partners relevant for CRM, including professional societies, academic institutions, site networks, patient groups, and suppliers.
  • Participate in governance or steering committee meetings with strategic partners and resolve complex problems related to clinical delivery.
  • Maintain high visibility of operational topics among TA strategic partners.
  • Lead and represent Boehringer Ingelheim as a clinical operational counterpart for alliance partners, in-licensing partners, and collaborators.
  • Support cross-functional teams in Medicine, TA, and Translational Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology in creating processes or standards necessary for improving execution efficiency and quality.
  • Foster inclusion of technology and digital tools that enable implementation of clinical programs with speed and value.
  • Challenge trial assumptions from the clinical delivery team and ensure data-driven trial planning, country and site selection, patient and customer-centricity, and build by design into clinical programs.

Requirements

  • MD or PhD degree is desirable; minimum is a degree in life sciences with more than 15 years of experience in clinical development and operations, or a Bachelor's degree in health sciences with a minimum of twenty (20) years of experience.
  • Experience within the Therapeutic Area of Cardio Renal Metabolic.

  • Proven track record in the creation/execution of digital innovation projects in healthcare.
  • Comprehensive/deep knowledge of the Medicine strategy and vision as well as comprehensive/deep knowledge or understanding of the TA strategy and vision.
  • In-depth knowledge of the strategy of competitors and of developments/trends in the market.
