About the position

The Executive Director for Communications at Duke Divinity School is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that enhances the School's brand and visibility. Reporting to the Dean, this role involves managing various communication activities, including digital and print publications, social media, and media relations, to engage prospective students, donors, and alumni. The Director also oversees the Office of Communications and collaborates with senior leadership to address communication opportunities and challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an integrated communications plan to advance Duke Divinity School's brand identity.
  • Create and execute a marketing and public relations strategy for new and expanding programs.
  • Serve as the communications advisor to the Dean and senior leaders.
  • Direct the development and maintenance of the School's website and manage vendor relationships.
  • Coordinate print and electronic communications to enhance the School's visibility.
  • Provide editorial oversight for Divinity School publications.
  • Oversee advertising, marketing efforts, and social media presence.
  • Engage and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of School events and programs.
  • Partner with Duke's Office of News and Communications for news distribution.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Communications, including budgeting and staff development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related discipline.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Seven years of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field, with at least two years in higher education.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for external audiences in print and online formats.
  • Experience in strategic communications and personnel management.

  • Advanced theological education and familiarity with ecclesial constituencies.
  • Experience building relationships with top-tier reporters and editors.
  • Extensive writing and editing experience focused on external audiences.
