About the position

The Executive Director/Controller at Sinai Chicago plays a pivotal role in providing operating and financial management expertise to oversee corporate reporting and accounting functions. This position is responsible for ensuring the completion of monthly financial statements, the annual audit, Medicare cost reports, 990 tax returns, and various other financial reports and filings. The Executive Director/Controller will guide the finance team and collaborate with key stakeholders to develop both short- and long-term strategies, while continuously seeking process improvements to align with organizational goals. In this role, the Executive Director/Controller will implement, document, and maintain effective processes to enhance the financial close and reporting processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of results. The position also entails direct oversight of several critical areas, including General Accounting, Grant Accounting, Fixed Assets, Taxation, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Net Revenue and Reimbursement, and Treasury. The Executive Director/Controller will report directly to the CFO and will be instrumental in driving financial performance through the use of financial and management systems. Key responsibilities include participating in the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures, identifying opportunities for improving customer interactions, contributing to initiatives aimed at cost reduction and revenue enhancement, and leading continuous improvement initiatives. The Executive Director/Controller will also collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to provide vision around accounting and reporting processes, assist with audit requirements, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Additionally, this role involves mentoring staff members, cultivating a culture of professional growth, and ensuring that the team remains competent to meet the objectives of Sinai Health System.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures required to safeguard system assets.
  • Determines opportunities to improve customer interactions to internal and external customers.
  • Contributes to organizations initiatives that achieve cost-reduction and revenue enhancement.
  • Maintains a broad knowledge of financial management strategies to optimize corporate finance operations.
  • Leads continuous improvement initiatives by observing effectiveness of accounting and reporting processes, identifying issues, recommending solutions, and providing senior management with feedback to support efficiency and accuracy of accounting and reporting operations and ensure team alignment with business goals.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders by providing vision around accounting and reporting processes, communicating with senior-level peers, and developing long-term financial strategies.
  • Demonstrates confidence in interacting with the executive management, physician leaders, and all levels of personnel within the finance, information systems, and strategic planning functions of the organization.
  • Assists with building, developing, and managing special projects by centralizing data and collaborating with internal stakeholders to streamline accounting and reporting functions and efficiencies.
  • Acts as a point of contact within area of responsibility by assisting with audit requirements, prioritizing tasks, and escalating complex inquiries to ensure accurate, efficient, and timely delivery of data.
  • Responsible for accounting and control of all capital assets, materials management, and accounts payable processes.
  • Interprets rulings issued by the federal, state, and local legal entities and ensures regulations issued by regulatory agencies, such as FASB, are strictly adhered to.
  • Drives financial performance through the use of financial and management systems.
  • Provides supervision and mentoring for the staff members in the Department.
  • Cultivates a culture that promotes and rewards professional growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, constructive communication, flexibility, teamwork, and customer service.
  • Recommends training requirements; ensures staff competencies remain at the highest level to meet the objectives and goals of Sinai Health System.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business required; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of hospital/healthcare finance and accounting experience.
  • 7-10 years of progressively increasing management experience.
  • Multiple site and multiple entity experience.
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced, continually changing/growing environment.
  • Track record of developing, implementing, administering, and monitoring accounting policies and procedures.
