About the position

The Executive Director for Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is a pivotal leadership role that encompasses the strategic oversight of all marketing, communications, and public relations activities within the center. This position is tasked with the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy that aligns with both the research initiatives and the cancer service line of the center. The Executive Director will report directly to both the Director of the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Associate Vice President of Strategy and Marketing in the Enterprise Marketing and Communications division, which is responsible for integrated marketing and communications for VCU and VCU Health. In this role, the Executive Director will be responsible for enhancing the center's reputation, promoting its research initiatives, and supporting its clinical services through effective marketing and communication strategies. The successful candidate will engage with various stakeholders, including leadership from Massey and VCU, patients, caregivers, donors, community partners, and the media, to cultivate relationships that enhance the center's image and impact. The Executive Director will also oversee brand management, ensuring a consistent and compelling presence across all channels that aligns with both the Massey and VCU/VCU Health brands. Additionally, the Executive Director will lead public relations initiatives to boost the center's visibility, manage marketing campaigns that promote research and clinical services, and foster effective internal communications to keep staff informed about key initiatives and developments. Collaboration with researchers to communicate breakthroughs and community outreach efforts to educate the public about cancer prevention and services will also be key responsibilities. Budget management and team leadership, including recruiting and developing a high-performing team, are essential components of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and vision for marketing, communications, and public relations efforts.
  • Cultivate relationships with Massey and VCU leadership, stakeholders, including patients, caregivers, donors, community partners, and the media.
  • Oversee the management of the Massey brand, ensuring a consistent and compelling presence across all channels.
  • Serve as a trusted member of the VCU Health Strategy and Marketing senior leadership team.
  • Develop and execute public relations initiatives to enhance the center's visibility and reputation.
  • Lead the development and execution of marketing campaigns promoting the center's research and cancer service line.
  • Foster effective internal communications within Massey and the cancer service line.
  • Collaborate with researchers to communicate research findings and breakthroughs to the public and medical community.
  • Work with the Associate Director for Community Outreach to develop communications around outreach programs.
  • Manage the Marketing and Communication's budget efficiently, ensuring effective resource allocation.
  • Recruit, develop, and manage a high-performing team of professionals in marketing, communications, and public relations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in leadership roles in marketing, communications, and public relations.
  • Proven experience in healthcare, cancer centers, or medical research institutions is highly desirable.
  • Strong strategic thinking and the ability to develop and execute successful marketing and communication strategies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to manage a diverse team.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing and social media strategies.
  • Experience with crisis communications and media relations.
  • Knowledge of cancer research and healthcare industry trends is a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
