About the position

The Executive Director of Marketing & Talent Excellence at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is a pivotal role that combines strategic leadership with a deep understanding of marketing principles and talent development. This position is designed for a dynamic leader who not only possesses strong marketing expertise but also has a vision for the future of marketing within the pharmaceutical industry. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring that the worldwide commercial organization represents a best-in-class marketing entity while fostering an environment where marketers can reach their full potential. Given the evolving workforce and the complexities of modern markets, including increased competition and regulatory challenges, this role is critical in driving necessary changes to the traditional marketing operating model. The Executive Director will play a strategic role in developing and implementing core marketing principles and standards across the organization. This includes the continued development of the bespoke BMS Marketing Quotient framework, which is essential for maintaining a consistent approach to driving customer behavior change and ensuring that patients receive appropriate therapies. The position requires collaboration across various markets and functions, engaging with senior leaders to cultivate a team-based, innovative, and customer-focused environment. In addition to marketing responsibilities, the Executive Director will focus on talent development, identifying critical skills for marketers, and establishing structured job profiles and career journeys. The role also involves creating a learning organization that captures best practices and integrates them into future marketing strategies. The Executive Director will be accountable for developing a governance model that embeds marketing rigor and talent assessment, as well as designing a change management approach that aligns with the evolving ways of working for marketers at BMS.

Responsibilities

  • Build and shape the company-wide commercial organization into a best-in-class marketing organization by expanding the Marketing Quotient framework.
  • Develop a talent skills-based approach to focus on shaping talent that evolves with the changing market.
  • Establish structured job profiles, articulate career journeys, and help marketers develop and grow within BMS.
  • Develop clear skill set expectations of marketing talent across markets, including skills model, job/role descriptions, and assessments.
  • Create a learning organization that shares best practices and captures launch learnings for future brands.
  • Build a curriculum that includes live and on-demand learning programs for marketers, including a robust onboarding program for new hires.
  • Develop a proactive communication plan that shares the phased development and implementation approach to marketing excellence.
  • Develop the governance model that helps to embed marketing rigor and talent assessment.
  • Design the change management approach that integrates seamlessly into all marketers' ways of working.

Requirements

  • Over 15 years of healthcare/pharmaceutical/biotech commercial marketing experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of marketing experience across various therapeutic areas within a large market and worldwide.
  • Experience in change management.
  • Strong ability to work across the matrix/function, including medical and access.
  • Ability to interface with senior leadership, including CEO and CCO levels.
  • Demonstrated willingness to push and evolve the organization with creative thinking and capability building.
  • Deep knowledge of customers, competition, and the regulatory landscape, integrating across research and analytics.
  • Experience in developing talent and designing training programs.
  • Strong grasp of business and marketing fundamentals with a natural curiosity and willingness to take risks.
  • Prior experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building and teaching marketing fundamentals.
  • Proven track record of driving performance across diverse groups and functions.
