About the position

The Executive Director of Advancement Communications & Marketing at the University of Missouri will play a pivotal role in shaping the university's marketing and communications strategies. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing, Kristen Smarr, and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Donor Engagement, Erin Allen, this position is responsible for overseeing a team of 10, including three direct reports. The Executive Director will lead the development and execution of comprehensive marketing plans that effectively communicate the university's mission and engage alumni and donors. This includes crafting messaging strategies, selecting vendors, and preparing requests for proposals (RFPs) to ensure the highest quality of outreach and engagement. In addition to managing marketing initiatives, the Executive Director will guide a content generation team focused on curating impactful stories that resonate with the university's alumni and donor base. The role requires the development of multi-channel strategic marketing and communications plans in collaboration with other advancement leaders, ensuring alignment with the university's overall goals. As the Executive Editor for MIZZOU Magazine, the Executive Director will oversee content for a publication that reaches 30,000 alumni households, further enhancing the university's connection with its community. The Executive Director will also provide strategic advice to senior university leadership, including deans and academic unit communicators, on alumni and donor communications strategies. This includes managing the marketing and communications budgets, defining outcomes that drive revenue and participation, and making critical decisions regarding the outsourcing of projects and services. The position operates within a standard work schedule of Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and requires a strong commitment to the university's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Direct marketing and communications programs, including marketing plan development, segmentation, and messaging strategy.
  • Prepare RFPs, vendor selection, research preparation, and analyze research to measure results (ROI).
  • Lead the content generation team to curate stories of success and impact to inspire alumni and donors.
  • Develop multi-channel strategic marketing and communications plans in coordination with other advancement leaders.
  • Serve as Executive Editor for MIZZOU Magazine, overseeing content for a publication with a circulation of 30,000 alumni households.
  • Advise senior university leadership on alumni and donor communications strategies and opportunities.
  • Determine, allocate, monitor, and manage the overall Marketing and Communications budgets.
  • Define outcomes that increase revenue and participation for programs, projects, materials, and events.
  • Make decisions regarding the outsourcing of projects and services.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 7 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a history of success in developing long-term relationships.
  • Effectiveness as a leader and strategic thinker.
  • Attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Ability to work independently and understand university regulations and policies.
