About the position

The Executive Director of Executive Communications will lead strategic communication efforts for the Offices of the President and the Vice President for Strategic Operations at Indiana University. This role is essential in enhancing the university's reputation through impactful communications, collaborating with various stakeholders to convey the university's vision and initiatives effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive communication plans/strategies aligned with the university's mission and IU 2030 strategic plan.
  • Craft clear, compelling, and consistent messages for various communication formats including videos, social media, speeches, and media outreach.
  • Assist the media relations team in developing messages and response strategies.
  • Develop and execute a sound social media strategy that reinforces key messaging.
  • Create high-quality content such as videos, speeches, op-eds, and newsletters as needed.
  • Lead the development and execution of crisis communication messaging, ensuring timely responses to emerging issues.
  • Foster relationships with key stakeholders including university leadership, faculty, students, and external partners.
  • Ensure effective branding across executive communications in coordination with University Communications and Marketing.
  • Monitor industry trends and best practices to enhance communication outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field.
  • 8 years of experience in a relevant field, with a preference for 10 years in strategic communications or public relations, including 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proficient communication skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Ability to influence internal and external constituents and collaborate effectively with diverse groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations and crisis communication.
  • Proficiency in digital communication platforms, including video production techniques and social media.
