About the position

The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is responsible for strategically aligning marketing and communications efforts with Advancement priorities to meet fundraising and alumni engagement goals. This role involves leading a team of twelve staff members, overseeing various facets of communications and marketing operations, and collaborating with the campus community to connect with alumni and inspire philanthropic support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and inspire a professional team in digital communications, creative design, and marketing focusing on alumni engagement, fundraising, and stewardship.
  • Regularly assess and prioritize team projects, offer strategic advice, help to minimize roadblocks, and foster connection to ensure success in meeting metrics.
  • Set and evaluate team goals and optimize systems for efficiency.
  • Collaborate strategically with the Advancement Senior Leadership team and colleagues across the division to advance the university.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and brand across Advancement communications channels, driving alumni engagement, donor acquisition and retention.
  • Oversee the division-wide message strategy and content calendar, while developing strategic marketing and communications plans to reach key audiences.
  • Utilize data-driven strategies to continuously measure the effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts.
  • Provide resources, tools, templates, and training to the UT Knoxville campus on effective communication to alumni and donor audiences.
  • Serve as a key strategic partner to UT Knoxville's Office of Communications and Marketing, as well as academic colleges and units.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations
  • 2+ years of supervisory/management experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
