About the position

As an Executive Underwriter in the Risk Management department at Liberty Mutual, you will play a pivotal role in balancing data analytics with human intuition to manage a diverse portfolio of casualty insurance accounts. This position requires a blend of quantitative and qualitative reasoning, allowing you to enjoy the autonomy of managing your own accounts while contributing to the company's profitability and business goals. You will be responsible for developing, growing, and maintaining a sizable and complex book of business, focusing on loss-sensitive primary casualty lines such as Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Commercial Auto. Your role will involve close collaboration with brokers and customers to assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions, and negotiate deals that maximize profitability. In this position, you will leverage your market presence and expertise to underwrite profitable business, acting as a representative for Liberty Mutual. You will maintain established relationships with senior brokers and agents while also seeking to strengthen these connections and develop new ones. Your responsibilities will include providing significant input into business and marketing planning processes, utilizing advanced data-driven insights from portfolio analysis. You will also participate in cross-departmental projects aimed at driving underwriting and process excellence, collaborating effectively with various stakeholders, including underwriting support, claims, and actuarial teams. Additionally, you will guide and mentor less experienced underwriters, providing coaching and feedback to help them grow in their roles. Your strong knowledge of key legal cases, legislation, and regulations impacting underwriting will be essential as you share your expertise and provide thought leadership within the organization. Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of brokers/agents and clients.
  • Leverage market presence and expertise to develop and underwrite profitable business.
  • Maintain strong relationships with senior/market-leading brokers and key agents.
  • Articulate key coverage differences with a high degree of detail.
  • Provide significant input into business and marketing planning processes using data-driven insights.
  • Participate in cross-departmental projects designed to drive underwriting and process excellence.
  • Model effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Share knowledge based on technical expertise and provide external thought-leadership.
  • Mentor, coach, and train other underwriters and internal partners.

Requirements

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.
  • A minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related business experience.
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable terms.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and capability to define and implement necessary processes.
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
