About the position

The Expanded Learning Program Instructor at Life Academy Middle School is responsible for leading academic, physical, and enrichment activities for students in an expanded learning setting. This role involves mentoring youth, fostering a positive and inclusive environment, and supporting educational equity. The instructor will work collaboratively with a team to engage students and promote their emotional well-being while providing a safe and fun learning atmosphere.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain the emotional well-being of the students.
  • Provide a safe environment for all participants.
  • Act as a positive role model for struggling students.
  • Engage students in lesson plans that support school day learning.
  • Facilitate community circles based on restorative practices.
  • Collaborate with youth to support their learning and development through a youth-driven curriculum.

Requirements

  • Must have an Associate Degree or higher, or 48 or more college units, or a High School Diploma/GED and pass the Instructional Aide exam.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and TB test clearance.
  • Ability to reliably commute to Oakland, CA.
  • Commitment to education equity and leadership.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Availability on-site Mon/Wed/Fri from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
  • Ability to redirect and review expectations and rules with large groups of students of various developmental levels.
  • Previous experience coaching at the middle school or youth level.
  • Ability to foster a positive and inclusive sports culture that prioritizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and individual growth.
  • Punctuality, responsibility, and professionalism are a priority.
  • Commitment to a full school year.
  • Ability to practice open, clear, and consistent communication and commitment to participate in professional development.
