About the position

The Consultant Process Engineer will support the design, development, assessment, and monitoring of process designs that foster agility, resilience, efficiency, and patient safety in and around the Expanse electronic health record (EHR). In this role, the Consultant Process Engineer will employ Lean, Six Sigma, and Toyota Production System methodologies to define and describe opportunities for improvement in clinical workflows in and involving Expanse. This role will consult with teams to generate recommendations to gain efficiencies for clinical workflows in Expanse, including but not limited to physician / APP, nursing, lab, and pharmacy. The Consultant Process Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including but not limited to the Expanse product team, Clinical Informatics, enterprise clinical teams such as Nursing and Pharmacy, division, and facility teams to help implement improvements, and sustain results, using a methodical process. This role will work closely with cross-functional team members (as well as external stakeholders), including multiple constituents across the enterprise, to execute both DMAIC and DMADV projects that will establish solution directionality and support leadership to effectively and efficiently assess, develop and integrated new workflows, derived from the translation of workflow observations, quantitative inputs from various clinical systems and qualitative inputs. The Consultant Process Engineer is a licensed professional Lean Six Sigma Belt who possesses a strong understanding of Lean Six Sigma process design and improvement methodologies that can be utilized to optimize and transform clinical workflows in the acute care setting. They are also versed in using Human Factors Engineering to examine human abilities, limitations, behaviors and processes in order to inform human-centered design. The primary function of this role is to support the Director of Process Engineering in the execution of process engineering projects, intentionally leading to step changes for the healthcare industry.

Responsibilities

  • Propose and support the development of new processes in and around the Expanse EHR that support agility, resilience, efficiency, and patient safety
  • Scout emerging processes in other EHRs and health systems in order to define new opportunities that can add business value
  • Assess existing processes and workflows at sites using Expanse to identify priorities and opportunities for improvement
  • Employ process improvement methodologies as standards for assessing workflow in and around the Expanse EHR
  • Oversee the design, prototyping, testing, refinement, and implementation of new processes related to Expanse
  • Track initiatives against key measurable success metrics to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks to the Expanse organizational strategy, project plans, and key milestones
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Expanse organization to design and assess processes according to the principles of Lean, Six Sigma, or other process engineering modalities
  • Lead a cross-functional team to conduct process improvement and design process studies/audits, as well as studies in business process re-engineering and system redesign
  • Collaborate with Clinical Analytics, Business Operations, and cross-functional design partners (as well as external partners) to design, lead, assign and execute quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Work with a cross-functional team to improve the customer experience and design solutions that systematically reduce errors, reduce cost, and increase revenues that create clinical and business capacity
  • Lead logistical onsite needs for discovery work
  • Lead the design, logistical planning, and execution of large (25 or more participants) Kaizen sessions including senior leader both internal and external to Expanse
  • Facilitate teams through Lean Six Sigma activities to progress projects through the methodology
  • Adhere to the standard operating procedures of the Expanse organization, including all supportive technologies used to organize and progress work efforts
  • Support development of pilot and project implementation plans
  • Engage with Expanse product team, Division teams, and facility teams to assess, design, and implement improved workflows with the Expanse platform
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess processes, implement improvements, and sustain results, using a methodical process
  • Lead and execute through others in concurrent enterprise Lean Six Sigma engagements to develop strong working relationships and productive collaboration with project teams and other key stakeholders
  • Proactively identify and mitigate opportunities/barriers to successful completion of assigned work, escalating accordingly to the Director of Process Engineering
  • Support the analysis of multiple inputs to produce standard work products and artifacts/outputs that render a concise and synthesized clinically-lead analysis of perceived, current, and ideal state
  • Engage with executives, including Strategy, Clinical Operations, Clinical Informatics Product Lifecycle Logistics, Business Operations, Data/Technical leaders, and other business partners
  • Understand internal and external stakeholder roadmaps and provide potential improvement insights to achieve business goals
  • Support process mining projects that support automation efforts based on identified complexity of existing business processes
  • Educate, inform and advocate for the capabilities and benefits of process improvement and continuous performance management strategies and tactics as a means to enhance and accelerate CT&I-related work
  • Lead mapping exercises to workflow, including automations, using toolsets such as Visio and collaborate with technology teams and leadership teams on larger scale efforts
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of complex technical systems, workflows, and application details and requirements to enable support and provide historical record for department technologies
  • Provide updates and reports to leadership on progress
  • Participate in scoping of projects with key stakeholders

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred (Industrial Engineering preferred)
  • 6+ years of experience in Process Improvement and Data Analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Visio and Excel required
  • Ability to travel up to 50% required
  • Experience with Minitab preferred
  • Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification required or ability to obtain certification within 18 months of hire date
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • American Society for Quality (ASQ) certification preferred
  • Clinical experience in Nursing or Ancillary Service Lines preferred
  • User Experience (UX) / User Interface (UI) Design Experience preferred
