About the position

The Expanse Clinical Process Engineer II at HCA Healthcare plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and safety of clinical workflows associated with the Expanse electronic health record (EHR). This position is designed for a professional who will support the design, development, assessment, and monitoring of process designs that promote agility, resilience, and patient safety. The Process Engineer II will utilize methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and the Toyota Production System to identify opportunities for improvement in clinical workflows involving various healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. In this role, the engineer will collaborate with Senior and Consulting Process Engineers, as well as cross-functional teams, to implement improvements and sustain results through a methodical process. The responsibilities include executing DMAIC and DMADV projects, assessing existing processes, tracking initiatives against key metrics, and identifying risks to the organizational strategy. The Process Engineer II will also support large process improvement studies and collaborate with Clinical Analytics and Business Operations to conduct data analysis that informs workflow design and evaluation. The ideal candidate will be a licensed professional Lean Six Sigma Belt with a solid understanding of process design and improvement methodologies. They will be responsible for mapping out workflow changes, documenting complex systems, and advocating for continuous performance management strategies. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying barriers to success and collaborating with various teams to enhance clinical and business capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of new processes in and around the Expanse EHR that support agility, resilience, efficiency, and patient safety.
  • Assess existing processes and workflows at sites using Expanse to identify priorities and opportunities for improvement.
  • Employ process improvement methodologies as standards for assessing workflow in and around the Expanse EHR.
  • Track initiatives against key measurable success metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify risks to the Expanse organizational strategy and escalate accordingly as well as update project plans and key milestones.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Expanse organization to design and assess processes according to the principles of Lean, Six Sigma, or other process engineering modalities.
  • Support large process improvement and design process studies/audits, as well as studies in business process re-engineering and system redesign.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Analytics, Business Operations, and cross-functional design partners to design, lead, assign and execute quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Work with a cross-functional team to improve the customer experience and design solutions that systematically reduce errors, reduce cost, and increase revenues.
  • Support logistical onsite needs for discovery work.
  • Support the design, logistical planning, and execution of large Kaizen sessions including senior leaders.
  • Adhere to the standard operating procedures of the Expanse organization, including all supportive technologies used to organize and progress work efforts.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate opportunities/barriers to successful completion of assigned work, escalating accordingly to the Manager or Director of Process Engineering.
  • Support the analysis of multiple inputs to produce standard work products and artifacts/outputs that render a concise and synthesized clinically-lead analysis of perceived, current, and ideal state.
  • Educate, inform and advocate for the capabilities and benefits of process improvement and continuous performance management strategies.
  • Map out changes to workflow, including automations, using toolsets such as Visio and collaborate with technology teams and leadership teams on larger scale efforts.
  • Document complex technical systems, workflows, and application details and requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred (Industrial Engineering preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience in Process Improvement and Data Analysis required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Visio and Excel required.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% required.
  • Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification required or ability to obtain certification within 18 months of hire date.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • American Society for Quality (ASQ) certification preferred.
  • Clinical experience in Nursing or Ancillary Service Lines preferred.
  • User Experience (UX) / User Interface (UI) Design Experience preferred.
