About the position

Position Title: Deckhand Reports To: Captain of the Vessel Division: Offshore Location: Lockport, LA About Marquette: Headquartered in Paducah, Kentucky and founded in 1978, Marquette is a leading provider of inland marine transportation services. Our Company operates over 130 towboats on the Mississippi River System, Gulf-Intracoastal Waterway, and near-shore coastwise market. In addition, the Company controls over 1,000 dry cargo barges. The Company has additional offices in St Rose, LA, Lockport, LA and La Porte, TX. With over 1,500 vessel and shore-based employees, Marquette is the largest provider of independent towing services within the inland waterways. We are the only fully integrated fleet in the industry that can do what we do. As a Deckhand, you will be responsible for routine deck operations aboard the vessel. This includes building and checking tow on the hip, catching lines on deck fittings, casting lines free when getting underway, and assisting in the navigation of the boat from the deck. You will prepare and set up the proper equipment for towing astern and handle anchors. The role requires carrying rigging (ratchets, wires, and straps), pumps, hoses, lines, and other equipment weighing 75-100 lbs. You will be expected to work outdoors for extended periods of time, in various weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and snow. Daily responsibilities also include vessel housekeeping and maintenance tasks such as sweeping, mopping, painting, and equipment repair. You will maintain the vessel's appearance, which includes washing, cleaning, chipping, and painting. Additionally, you will assist with the stocking and delivery of various supplies to and from the vessel, and perform periodic cleaning tasks including trash removal, mopping, scraping, sanding, and painting. Other related duties may be assigned or requested as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Working outdoors for extended periods of time in various weather conditions.
  • Daily vessel housekeeping and maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, painting, and equipment repair.
  • Maintaining vessel appearance including washing, cleaning, chipping, and painting the vessel.
  • Assisting with the stocking and delivery of various supplies to and from the vessel.
  • Performing periodic cleaning tasks including trash removal, mopping, scraping, sanding, and painting.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Must be able to be away for periods of time as schedules are generally 28 days away and 14 days home.
  • Physical labor experience working in the outdoors is a plus.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Must be 18 or older to board a vessel.
  • Must be able to meet all physical qualifications per company guidelines.
  • Must have Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be able to attain it.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in the English language.
  • Must be able to handle and lift rigging (up to 75 lbs-100lbs).
