Bloomberg Digital is seeking a New York-based editor to commission and edit news explainers, focusing primarily on content related to the US and the Americas. This role is part of a small, global team, and the editor's work will also touch on other regions. The ideal candidate will be an experienced journalist with a passion for providing context behind news stories, demonstrating curiosity across a wide range of topics including business, finance, markets, economics, technology, environment, health, politics, government, and culture. The position requires comfort in a highly collaborative and innovative environment, where the editor will be trusted to exercise excellent news judgment and a sense of urgency on breaking news, ensuring that stories are suitable for Bloomberg's standards. In this role, the editor will be responsible for generating new ideas for explainers, both large and small, and moving them from conception to publication efficiently. They will need to balance long-term projects with the regular publication of short-term pieces. Strong writing skills are essential, as the editor will be tasked with crafting compelling copy and display language to effectively sell stories. Additionally, careful editing is crucial to ensure that text is logically organized, clear, precise, and free from jargon, repetition, and opinion, while adhering to correct style, grammar, and punctuation. The editor will also need to be imaginative about story presentation and find ways to engage newsroom colleagues as regular collaborators. They will work with colleagues across various platforms, such as video, audio, and magazines, to adapt and expand text explainers for different purposes. Utilizing audience data to inform topic selection and analyzing how pieces resonate with readers will also be part of the role. Collaboration across the team, newsroom, and platforms is essential, with an emphasis on conducting oneself honestly, professionally, and collegially.
