About the position

The Cambridge Public Schools is seeking an Extended Term Substitute Physical Education Teacher for grades JK-5 at the Amigos School, available from September through no later than November 2024. The Amigos School is dedicated to a strong tradition of excellence in bilingual education, serving a diverse student body from various neighborhoods and cultural backgrounds. The school emphasizes two-way immersion, which fosters high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism, and cultural competencies among students. This approach not only motivates students but also promotes community building and cooperation, preparing them for the global economy. The Health, Physical Education, and Wellness Department at Cambridge Public Schools is committed to creating supportive learning environments where all students are recognized, celebrated, and empowered. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and implementing Physical Education instruction in alignment with the Massachusetts Health Curriculum Framework and the SHAPE America Physical Education Standards. The teacher will be expected to teach the Cambridge Public Schools Physical Education curriculum with skill and fidelity, while also fostering a collegial spirit that supports professional growth and aligns with the educational goals of the district. The role requires a commitment to continuous learning and improvement, ensuring that all students achieve high levels of success. The teacher may also perform related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall mission of the department and the school community.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement Physical Education instruction according to the Massachusetts Health Curriculum Framework and SHAPE America Physical Education Standards.
  • Teach the Cambridge Public Schools Physical Education curriculum with skill and fidelity.
  • Display a collegial spirit that supports and enhances continual professional growth.
  • Commit to continuous learning, improvement, and reflection to ensure high student achievement.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience and/or education in physical education.
  • Massachusetts Certification in PreK-8 Physical Education preferred.
  • High levels or native language proficiency in Spanish, including listening, speaking, reading, grammar, and writing.
  • Awareness of the developmental needs of elementary and adolescent learners and strategies to meet those needs through the curriculum.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Previous successful experience working in a multicultural environment and demonstrated implementation of culturally responsive practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with a diverse staff and student body.
  • A strong work ethic and commitment to student success.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.
